How to save the last of America's Wild Horses

Photo Credit: Madeleine Pickens Wild Horses

Why do the BLM want the horses removed? The answer is to make room for cattle to graze. The BLM says there isn’t enough forage for both of them, so the horses must go. Why can’t the cattle go somewhere else? Where can they go? Over 80% of all farmland is to grow crops to feed livestock NOT people. Did you know that 95% of oats and 80% of corn grown in the world are used to feed animals, while people starve due to the poor function of developed land? People are dying from E-Coli found in the food they eat and this bacteria comes factory farms. These farms are unlike anything you have ever seen they are deplorable houses of death. There are thirteen cattle slaughter houses in the United States and they murder approximately 100,000 cows per day!

So here is the answer to the problem of the wild horses. Stop eating cows! Decrease the demand for meat and the horses will not suffer from it. Every time you eat a burger, another cow is needed to replace the meat. 2000 gallons of water are needed to make one steak, 16 pounds of grain is needed to make one pound of beef. It takes one acre of land to produce only 165 pounds of beef! Think about that when you have over 100 million cows in the United States alone and more being imported from Canada. Cattle are then fattened up in massive feedlots before being brutally murdered. Some of these feedlots can hold up to 150,000 cows at once!
Until the meat production decreases dramatically the wild horses will not be the only ones that are affected. Think about your dining preferences, save the majestic wild horses, yourself and the life of a very unlucky cow.

Dairyland Greyhound Racetrack in Kenosha , Wisconsin will be closing on December 31, 2009.

900 Greyhounds will need to be adopted otherwise they will be euthanized, now is a great time to consider adopting a Greyhound. They are very loving and laid back. They don’t need the space people think they need. They are great for an active family because they have been crated almost all their lives and they sleep about 18 out of the 24 hours a day. They are just looking for someone to love them and supply them with a warm bed!!!!
They test the dogs to see if they are cat friendly and or small dog friendly. They also know if a dog should be a single dog or if they would be great in a 2, 3, or 4 dog house!!!
PLEASE CONTACT THE RACE TRACK ADOPTION CENTER DIRECTLY AT (262) 612-8256
The adoption center is open 7 days a week. These dogs do not have long to live, please help one or more of them if you can.

“Oreo’s Law” Would Give Dogs a Second Chance at Life -

FROM THE NOKILL ADVOCACY CENTER
The ASPCA killed Oreo, an abused dog, despite the fact that a local No Kill shelter had offered to save her. You can read more about the case in this independently written opinion for the Examiner: The Meaning of Oreo.

In response to the killing of Oreo, two New York State legislators have introduced legislation to prevent this from ever happening again. Please join us in supporting "Oreo's Law" so that her needless death will not be in vain.

URGENT Labrador Beagle Mix Carrollton Georgia Needs Home NOW!

Please, please help Dwight, he's been held over for almost three weeks (unusual) because he is so sweet, and late Sunday is likely his last day. Its ironic the same people who have held him over hoping, will be the ones to end his life.

He came to the shelter happy and bright, and full of life. In a few short weeks, he has become sad and depressed, he curls up in a ball in his cage, no longer hoping for the attention he originally sought. He has been passed by one too many times. He is "quietly dignified", a special boy IF given the opportunity.

Please someone help him, he is going to lose his life for being patient and waiting to be noticed. Along the way he's lost HOPE, it can be renewed. Many of the most loving and devoted dogs I've known have had similar stories. They should inspire all of us to keep trying for the ones still waiting to shine.

Thank you for taking the time to xpost for Dwight.

STOP FUNDING THE ASPCA - IN THE NAME OF OREO

Last June, a one-year old dog named Oreo was intentionally thrown off a sixth floor Brooklyn roof top by her abuser. Oreo sustained two broken legs and a fractured rib. Although the facts are sketchy, Oreo also appears to have been beaten in the past—several of the neighbors in the building where Oreo lived reported hearing the sounds of the dog being hit. The ASPCA nursed her back to health and arrested the perpetrator. They also dubbed her the “miracle dog.”

The miracle was short-lived. On Friday, the ASPCA killed Oreo, despite the fact that a local No Kill shelter had offered to save her.

We have said this before, but it bears repeating: Working to reform the humane movement to bring it back to its original mission of saving lives, we have experienced many unexpected and heartbreaking moments of animals being betrayed by their so-called protectors.

We believe this is one of them. PLEASE READ THIS ARTICLE ABOUT OREO AND THE FAULTS OF THE ASPCA; independently written article for the Examiner: The Meaning of Oreo.

Beautiful Lab Mix puppy "Mr. Tibbs" needs a home

This handsome lab/shepherd mix is ready for adoption! Mr Tibbs came into our shelter in Greenville about two months ago. He had been hit by a car. A good Samaritan paid for him to go to the vet for treatment. He is fully recovered now…and ready to go to a rescue or a forever home! Mr Tibbs has lots of energy and would do well with an active family. He is still just a baby, only about 10 months old. He has been neutered and is heartworm negative. He has fully recovered from his injuries to his leg.

PLEASE help Mr Tibbs. He can’t stay at the vet any longer—he needs a home.

Please contact noahsarksrescue@mac.com or animalcareservices@greenvillecounty.org if you can help.

Mr Tibbs

Due to the high volume of responses that we get from those of you who want to save animals, we kindly request correspondence by email only. Thank you!

MIAMI NO KILL SHELTER CLOSING AFTER 27 YRS NEEDS HELP

TO ALL OF MY DEAR FRIENDS THAT HAVE HELPED ME POST MY PET RESCUE MIAMI SHELTER DOGS OVER THE PAST 4 YEARS..........I AM THE BEARER OF THE SAD NEWS OF THE SHELTER'S CLOSING
THIS HAS BEEN A NO-KILL RESCUE/SHELTER/SANCTUARY FOR THE PAST 27 YEARS. SAVING THOUSANDS OF DOGS AND CATS. PET RESCUE DID NOT DISCRIMINATE, DID NOT JUST TAKE THE ONES THAT WOULD EASILY BE ADOPTED, BUT TOOK WHICHEVER ANIMALS CROSSED THE THRESHOLD.
DUE TO THE ECONOMY, THE PAST FEW YEARS HAVE SEEN A DRASTIC REDUCTION IN MONEY AND VOLUNTEERS, AND PET RESCUE CAN NO LONGER SURVIVE. THIS RESCUE HAVEN IS CLOSING DOWN IN THE NEXT TWO MONTHS. WE STILL HAVE 15 DOGS AND OVER 100 CATS THAT LIVE HERE. SOME ARE VERY ADOPTABLE, SOME NOT AS ADOPTABLE BECAUSE OF THEIR AGE.
BUT ALL DESERVE TO HAVE A FOREVER HOME
I HAVE MADE A LIST WITH PASTED PIX OF THE 15 DOGS (THE CATS ARE TOO NUMEROUS TO LIST BUT I WILL BE SENDING A FEW AT A TIME IN SEPARATE EMAILS). I KNOW THAT WE ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES WITH DESPERATE ANIMALS, BUT PLEASE JUST LOOK AND SEE IF YOU CAN PLACE ANY OF THEM AND PLEASE SEND THIS LIST AROUND. WE ARE NOT ASKING FOR OTHER RESCUES TO MAKE ROOM BUT ARE HOPING TO PLACE THEM ALL IN A HOME OR LONGTERM FOSTER. SOME OF THESE DOGS HAVE SPENT 10+ YEARS AT THE RESCUE AND THIS IS THEIR HOME, SO IT WOULD BE TRAUMATIC TO PLACE THEM IN A SHELTER/KENNEL ENVIRONMENT WHERE THEY WOULD BE CAGED.
I AM THE CONTACT, KATHY 305-401-4693. OR EMAIL KLCREMER@AOL.COM
IF ANY OF THE PICTURES DID NOT COME THROUGH, (AS SOMETIMES THEY DON'T AFTER THEY BEEN THROUGH CYBERSPACE) PLEASE GO TO THE WEBSITE WWW.PETRESCUEMIAMI.COM. ALL ANIMALS ARE SPAYED/NEUTERED AND FULLY VETTED.
GOLDEN OLDIES-
Ginger( mix? 50lb) and Louie (shep mix 65lbs) 12 and 14 yo, lived their lives at PR together. Ginger is a tripod. She loves Louie but no other dogs or cats. They are both loving with people and totally non-aggressive.

Heather(Beagle mix 5olbs) 13 yo, lived her life at PR, loves the volunteers. Is very shy and picky about the people she loves. Probably not good with other dogs, used to run in a pack but all have died. No cats or kids. But a quiet home with relaxed adults would make her happy. She loves to walk on the leash for short walks. No picture.
Junior 14 (akita 50 lbs.), lived his entire life at PR.... He is loving to the people he knows. He shakes and is mostly deaf and doesn't see well. Probably doesn't have a long time in this world, but he still knows when I come to give walks and hangs at the door whining until I get him. Don't think he will be good with other dogs or cats, but not sure since he has been alone for many years.
Sport- 8yo lab mix. Friendly, happy guy. About 50 lbs. No cats though. Gets along with other dogs.
Samson- 9 yo yellow labrador. Sweet as can be. Good with other dogs. No cats though, not too old to chase them.
Blackie- 8yo black lab female. Good with cats and other dogs.
YOUNG ADULTS:
Heidi -3 yo shep mix(45 lbs) who is so timid that she won't come near you, she is ok with some dogs if they don't jump on her and want to play. She has come around to most of us and will let you pet her and gives you her paw, she needs a very patient and loving gentle family. An older person/s would be perfect. No cats.
Roxie 3 yo 30 lb little black mixed terrier. Very frightened of people until she knows them. Very submissive though and just runs to hide when strangers come. She has made leaps of progress at Pet Rescue in the 2 years that she has been here. Good with other dogs and cats.
BEAUTY AND HONEY- mommy and daughter yellow lab/ridgeback mixes that are 2 and 4 yo. They have been at PR 2 years but are extremely timid and don't show well, run and hide when people come look at them. They are very sweet and non-aggressive to humans, attached at the hip. Not good with cats, have been good with male dogs, but together they don't let any other dog into their pack.
HUNTER- 2 yo and 40 lbs, shep/spitz/maybe chow black. He loves the volunteers and really wants to please, but he is a very nervous dog and if a person he doesn't know makes a darting movement or tries to pet him on his lower back, and he thinks they mean him harm, he will turn around and do a quick growl/snarl(never to me, but to those he doesn't know) He has never bitten. He shows lots of crazy aggression to other dogs from his kennel, but when off leash with dogs he has been fine and plays. He wants to be the ALPHA. He really needs an experienced owner that will work with him. He wants to be loved so much and has a lot of love to give. He loves to play fetch and go on walks. I don't think he should be placed in a home with children. Young adults and older. He is not good with cats.
He comes with an obedience training package from Edel Miedes, k9 advisor.
Very Adoptables:
Boone-75 lb hound/rhod.rideback. Under 2 yo Handsome guy, loves attention. Very active and strong and powerful. Is having obedience training. Free training lesson in the home with adopter. Don't think he is good with cats. He is not animal aggressive.
Venus- 35 lb female labbish mix. 1year. Good with cats, dogs and kids
.
Zack-45lb male lab/mix- just under one year. Good with cats, dogs and kids.
Claude 7month old ?mix about 30 lbs...probably grow to 40lb. Very gentle but playful pup. Good wi everyone .
Troy-under 1yo lab/terrier mix. Good with everyone.

Cleaning the Pet Friendly Home

If you have pets you know too well what it is like to live with gobs of hair, wonderfully scented sofas and the ever so popular urine on the carpets. Being animal lovers we get used to this and frankly don’t even notice most of the time that our home smells like a kennel!
Well help has arrived you no longer have to create excuses for your pets when friends or family visit. Cleaning up after your pets can be easy and create a healthy environment for you and your entire family. The steps below will get you started on a “fresh” new home place.

The key is that you must remove the source before the smell will completely disappear.

1. Bathing your pets: Recommended at least once a month as needed.
If you have dogs, give them a bath. If they are dirty they will carry it around all over your home. It will also remove the excess hair before it reaches your furniture. For cats, brush them to remove excess hair; even for short hair breeds. I recommend the FURminator, it is a wonder brush. It is pricy, but will last a lifetime and is available at major pet department stores.
2. Furniture: Recommended at least once a week.
Next, start with removing animal hair from your furniture. The best way is by using a standard vacuum cleaner with the side attachment; simply guide it along the furniture until all the hair is gone. A common lint roller will also do the trick or Pledge® offers a Fabric Sweeper for pet hair, priced at around $4.00. I recommend spraying your furniture, drapes, and carpets with Oust® Carpet & Upholstery. This will eliminate odors caused by bacteria.
2. Floors: Recommended at least once a week.
Vacuum: Start with an empty vacuum bag or cup. Vacuum longer than you usually would to get out as much dirt and hair as possible.
Laminated or tile flooring: Sweep well then apply regular house hold bleach (full strength) and mop.  Nothing kills bacteria like bleach. You do not have to rinse, unless your floor becomes sticky.
Hardwood flooring:  Sweep well then use Murphy’s Soap to mop. Make sure you rinse or it will become sticky.
*Steam mops are preferred over standard mops, the hot steam kills bacteria as you mop.
3. Air filters AC/Furnace: Recommend once per month.
Change out your homes air filter. This should be done once a month when you have pets. I recommend Filtrete or WEB Lifetime Electrostatic filters. They range between $10 and $20 dollars each and are available at major home improvement stores.
4. Disinfect: Recommended daily.
Removing surface bacteria will remove lingering odors. I highly recommend Oust® Surface & Air. It kills greater than 99% of germs, even cold and flu viruses. This can be used on anything in your home.
5. Air fresheners: Recommended daily.
Utilizing standard spray air fresheners only mask the scent and usually will end up smelling like a pet covered in flowers. The best thing is to use a spray that will remove the odors instead of covering them up. Use Oust® Air Sanitizer II daily throughout your home. It kills airborne odor-causing bacteria and leaves your home spelling fresh and clean.
5. Urine: Recommended as needed.
I highly recommend Urine Gone™ for removal of all urine odors. This is a miracle product and is a must for anyone who has a pet. It is also great for rabbit, guinea pig and ferret cages.
6. Pet Bedding: Recommended at least two times a month.
If washable, wash in hot water then spray with Oust® Furniture & Upholstery.
The above are tried and true ways to keep your home fresh and clean. Your pets are your family and while the steps provided may seem to be a lot, but once you get into the hang of it, soon it will become second nature.
Enjoy, Life, Pets, Family

Is there really such a thing as a hypoallergenic cat?

Siberian Cat
Photo © 2004 Roger Skoog

The Lifestyle Pets Company of Delaware believes they have created through genetics a true hypoallergenic pet, with prices as much as $40,000 each. Is it a too good to be true invention or a clever way to embezzle thousands of dollars from hopeful cat lovers. It seems that the Lifestyle Pet Company has been under intense scrutiny from geneticist, allergist, respected cat breeders and the authorities. Mr. According to a U.S. cat breeder the cats seized by the Netherlands government while going through customs are F1 Savannah cats and not a special breed commanding the prices that the Lifestyle Pet Company was demanding. The cats were being transported from the U.S. to the Netherlands to unsuspecting buyers who believed the cats to be a truly 100% hypoallergenic breed.
Humans are actually not allergic to the cat itself, but have a reaction to the glycoprotein or Fel d 1 a oily substance that is secreted by the sebaceous glands. There are some breeds of cats that are less likely to cause an allergic reaction, but they still excrete the allergenic protein from their skin. The Siberian cat breed is known to produce much less Fel d 1 and has been prized by many allergic cat lovers.
If anyone is interested in purchasing or adopting a cat and have allergies, it is suggested that they spend at least an hour or more with the cat before adopting as many who have severe allergic reactions will begin to see symptoms within that time frame. This is not the case for everyone others take weeks to begin seeing symptoms.
