The Lifestyle Pets Company of Delaware believes they have created through genetics a true hypoallergenic pet, with prices as much as $40,000 each. Is it a too good to be true invention or a clever way to embezzle thousands of dollars from hopeful cat lovers. It seems that the Lifestyle Pet Company has been under intense scrutiny from geneticist, allergist, respected cat breeders and the authorities. Mr. According to a U.S. cat breeder the cats seized by the Netherlands government while going through customs are F1 Savannah cats and not a special breed commanding the prices that the Lifestyle Pet Company was demanding. The cats were being transported from the U.S. to the Netherlands to unsuspecting buyers who believed the cats to be a truly 100% hypoallergenic breed.
Humans are actually not allergic to the cat itself, but have a reaction to the glycoprotein or Fel d 1 a oily substance that is secreted by the sebaceous glands. There are some breeds of cats that are less likely to cause an allergic reaction, but they still excrete the allergenic protein from their skin. The Siberian cat breed is known to produce much less Fel d 1 and has been prized by many allergic cat lovers.
If anyone is interested in purchasing or adopting a cat and have allergies, it is suggested that they spend at least an hour or more with the cat before adopting as many who have severe allergic reactions will begin to see symptoms within that time frame. This is not the case for everyone others take weeks to begin seeing symptoms.
